The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations. Established in 1945 under the Charter of the United Nations, the General Assembly meets intensively September to December each year, and afterward, to facilitate discussion on all international issues among all (currently 193) members. The General Assembly has addressed Women, Peace and Security issues at least since 1979, when the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was adopted.
Women, Peace and Security Programme primarily engages during the General Assembly’s General Debate in September of each year, as well as in Post-2015 Sustainable Development discussions. We also work with our WILPF sister programmes to advocate at and monitor other General Assembly committee meetings including the Third Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural, and Human Rights issues.
