Indicators & Monitoring: Women, Peace and Security
Indicators and monitoring are signposts of change along the path to implementation. However, monitoring the Women, Peace and Security agenda continues to be challenging and problematic. In recent years, new monitoring tools have been developed, including the creation of a set of indicators on Women, Peace and Security (known as the Global Indicators), monitoring National Action Plans and independent civil society monitoring.
The Global Indicators are a list of twenty-six quantitative and qualitative indicators, organized into 4 Pillars: Prevention, Participation, Protection, and Relief and Recovery, which track and monitor the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325. These indicators were developed following the call to action derived from Security Council Resolution 1889 (2009). It was a breakthrough in accountability and effective monitoring. The indicators provide a foundation for efforts to accelerate implementation and have already been partially populated with data in annual reports by the Secretary-General to the Security Council.
