Effective Implementation of SCR 1325: Gender Equality in Peace and Security

UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (UNSCR 1325) recognizes that international peace and security is intrinsically linked to equality between men and women, and it also champions women's inclusion in all aspects of international security decision-making. UNSCR 1325 has increased the numbers of policies, resolutions, and national action plans dedicated toward achieving substantive equality in matters of international peace and security; yet, implementation has been slow, and little progress has been made. Rather than focusing exclusively on the rights of women, this webinar will highlight how gender equality in security and peace-making will increase the effectiveness of peace negotiations, peacekeeping, and protection of civilians.

Our presenter, Sahana Dharmapuri, is an independent gender advisor with fifteen years of experience providing policy advice and training on gender, peace, and security issues to USAID, NATO, The Swedish Armed Forces, the United States Institute for Peace, International Peace Institute, development consulting firms, and a number of NGOs. She has lectured and led trainings on gender and security issues at a wide variety of institutions including the Swedish Armed Forces International Training Center for work in Peace Support Operations in Stockholm, USAID Missions, Harvard University, Tufts University, the United States Institute for Peace, the State Department's Foreign Service Institute, and at three of the major U.S. combat and command centers. Her writing has appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, Human Rights Quarterly, The Global Responsibility to Protect Journal, The Global Observatory, and Parameters: The Senior Professional Journal of the US Army.
