UN Women Promotes the Integration of Peace and Security Issues into the National Action Plan

UN Women held national consultations on the integration of peace and security principles into the National Action Plan to be based on the findings of the Fergana valley baseline survey report conducted in the frames of the Cross-regional programme “Women connect across conflicts: building accountability for the implementation of the UN SC resolutions 1325, 1820, 1888, 1889," funded by the European Union and implemented in the South Caucasus, Central Asia, and South Asia.

The study report outlines the provisions of UN SC resolutions on women, peace and security relevant for the three countries of the Fergana Valley (Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) and proceeds to analyze legal and policy infrastructure for the implementation of the given resolutions in Tajikistan.The report also provides the assessment of the key challenges to peace in security in the three countries, how these challenges affect women lives and what are women's roles in addressing them, and concludes with a regional dimension of cooperation in the Fergana valley.

“The Consultation provided a forum to discuss and validate the key findings of the report and finalise the recommendations at country and regional level to effectively and concretely implement the UN SC Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security” said Graziella Piga, UN Women Manager of the Cross-regional programme. The consultations will use the momentum and promote a dialogue between state and civil society towards the improvement of legislation, expertise and technical capacity on conflict prevention, and to ensure that women, peace and security issues are integrated in the national action plan on gender equality.

The participants had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the National Action Plan (NAP) on gender equality, which was presented by Shokirova Marifat, the Head of the Gender Department of the Committee of Women and Family Affairs under the Government of Tajikistan. The participants discussed ways to connect this important document and the baseline findings to ensure the NAP will reflect Women, Peace and Security concerns in an adequate manner. The Georgian experience on the development of the National Action Plan for the implementation of UN Resolution 1325 was presented as an example that could be replicatedin Tajikistan.

The National Consultations saw the participation of government officials, parliamentarians, donors, stakeholders, and representatives from international and local NGOs, and women's human rights activists.The meeting was opened by Ms. Marhabo Akilova, Deputy of the Chairperson of the Committee on Women and Family Affairs of the Government of Tajikistan and served as the foundation for future joint work in the area of Women, Peace and Security.
