How can the SDGs accelerate the WPS Agenda? WILPF at the 2019 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

From 9-18 July, a WILPF delegation including women peacebuilders from Cameroon, the United Kingdom, Norway, and the United States will be attending the United Nations’ High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, to call on governments to make the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) work for women and girls in conflict.

WILPF has been mobilising the international community to leverage the SDGs, especially SDG16 on peaceful and inclusive societies, to accelerate commitments on Women, Peace and Security. Ahead of this year's forum, WILPF took a leading role in co-drafting our coalition Women's Major Group 2019 Position Paper, and is advocating based on coalition consensus positions for this year's political declaration to be bold and address structural obstacles to gender equality and peace. As part of her role as an elected Global Organising Partner for the Women's Major Group, our WPS Programme Director Abigail Ruane ​contributed to expert group meetings ​in Vienna, Rome, and New York to accelerate this work on SDG 16. 

During the HLPF, we are supporting a ​variety of events, including a Friends of 1325 meeting on synergies between the Women, Peace and Security and Sustainable Development agendas. Join us!

11 July 2019, 9:30AM-11:30AM: "Conversation with authors of the global Civil Society Report, Spotlight on Sustainable Development 2019 - Reshaping governance for sustainability: Transforming institutions – shifting power - strengthening rights" (Baha'i International Community, conference room at 866 UN Plaza).
